There are certain moments that resonate more emotionally because of things that happen in the main trilogy. Also, Reach as prequel is much more impactful when played after the main trilogy. Like everyone is saying, chronological would be: Reach, Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo ODST, Halo 3, and 4 (as far as MCC goes)īUT most of the Halo community recommends release order because you experience the natural progression of the series with its gameplay, story telling, lore building, graphics, etc. ![]() ![]() Just play them in order, trust me, it’ll make sense. The character is often not supposed to know what’s fully happening, and neither are you until the story unfolds. There is also this underlying theme of “what’s going on here this time” while playing most of the games that gets answered as you progress through them. There’s absolutely no reason to have to stop and look up anything about what’s going on in the original run of games, it’s a very simple story that could be summed up in a couple paragraphs, that has a few core mysteries that you’ll partially ruin if you play them out of release order. It won’t just ruin them if you play it first but it’ll ruin Reach too because Reach entirely hinges around you caring about details from the originals that you won’t even know. It’s set before the other games but it’s meant to be experienced last, it fleshes out the original trilogy and details from that trilogy are needed to understand it, it’s not a supplemental starting point because it’s meant to be the end of the series, it frankly won’t even make sense and you won’t understand why what’s going on in Reach is important if you haven’t played the originals first. You don’t start a tv series at episode 42 or a book from page 100 or whatever because it has backstory, you experience it in the order the creator meant for the story to unfold. That’s some of the assumed knowledge I’m talking about -things that the player is expected to know headed into reach. Yeah see because you didn’t play the first game that introduced them in a sensical way from a storytelling prospective. Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, and then you can stop but if not then Halo 4, 5 (halo wars 1+2), then infinite. There’s a couple halo wars mixed in there but they’re entirely different kinds of games and you’d have to be a fan of the franchise or RTS games to even approach those spin-offs and frankly and they should be played after the main games, maybe before halo infinite -the newest game in the franchise (that incorporates some of the story from halo wars), if you care to play those for whatever reason. It’s basically just that one game too, halo reach, that’s set out of order from halo 1 all the way to halo infinite. Halo 1 is a fun introduction to the series and they will all make more sense if played in release order, it’s very much an ending. Reach is literally bungie saying goodbye to the franchise, it should absolutely be experienced last, it’s somber and final and revelatory, divulging too much about the scenario that would remove the mystique from the original story, it’s not a good beginning point. You’ll also ruin the storytelling of the originals by knowing certain things that you shouldn’t yet while playing them. You’ve also got games like ODST set in the middle of halo 3, but it’s just meant to be played after, not mid play through which would just be a weird thing to stop and do. Reach plays very similarly to 3, it’s hard to go backwards from those because they’re the best in the series (and are also why halo 4-5 feel bad to play in comparison to them afterward because they’re not as good). I’m speaking from experience, everyone talks about halo 2 being some great game but I never had an original Xbox, only a pc where I played the first halo, then got a 360 and played the third and loved it, it was years before I got around to playing halo 2 after that and it didn’t live up to the expectation for me at all and it was entirely because 3 and reach played better. No, not about control schemes, like it plays differently and the previous games will feel more archaic.
